Best dog food for a Yorkie

Famous for their small size and big personality, Yorkshire Terriers, commonly known as Yorkies, are one of the more glamorous personalities in the dog world. From their elegant looks to their petite size to their active and bold characters, this breed is a favorite among pet owners. However, do not let their size and long and silky coat fool you, Yorkies are a big dog in a small body.

They are known to have a wild sense of adventure, which at times may land them in trouble. Even though they are a wonderful breed, these dogs also require special care and a nutritional diet to live a long and healthy life. Read on to discover how I found the best dog food for a Yorkie.

Hi! My name is Jane and last November, I adopted one of the cutest furry friends ever- it was a Yorkie. I named her Darcy, and she has become an irreplaceable member of my family. I decided to adopt Darcy because of her beautiful and long steel-blue and tan coat, perky topknot, and small size. More so, I have two older girls, pushing the Yorkie as the perfect family pet for us.

The Yorkie is an affectionate dog and very protective of its environment. She constantly barked at visitors, strangers, and unusual sounds. It took us some time to train her to tone it down and when it was appropriate to bark, but as a result, we became closer. We also noticed that Yorkies enjoy a lot of attention and they are very active dogs who enjoy daily walks around the block.

A Yorkie’s diet

I adopted Darcy when she was merely nine weeks old. As a puppy, I fed her all kinds of foods because I was unsure of what she would like and her dietary requirements. From wet to dry, raw to grain-free, and special home-made diets, I prepared them all for her.

After some time, I noticed that she began eating less and less every day. It got to a time where she only drank water and left her food untouched. Immediately, I got worried and visited a vet to understand what was going on with her. Luckily, nothing was wrong with Darcy, and she was still quite healthy.

The vet asked the type of foods I fed her and recommended a couple of healthy alternatives, ideal for a Yorkie. I realized that my Yorkie needed specific nutrients to grow strong and healthy. As a result, I began my search for the best dog food for my Yorkie.

The search for the right dog diet for my Yorkie

So, to find the best dog diet for my canine companion, I had to do a lot of research. I first began by buying food from my vet since she already had ready alternatives in his office. However, the purchase was quite expensive, pushing me to look for cheaper options. I turned to online forums and social media websites to see what other pet owners were feeding their Yorkies.

As a result, I made a lot of relevant discoveries about a Yorkie’s diet and what nutrients they need in different stages of their life. I tested a variety of different foods on Darcy, and she loved most of them and began adding weight after a while, a sign that I was on the right track.

The best dog food for a yorkie

Yorkshire Terrier dogs are a toy breed with tiny mouths and petite stomachs. Generally, they weigh between 4 and 7 pounds and grow to a height of 8 to 9 inches tall when fully matured. Being a small breed dog, they are more prone to health problems than other large breed dogs. Therefore, you have to feed these dogs with a wholesome diet made from high-quality ingredients for them to live a long and healthy life.

As in most dogs, proteins are one of the most vital nutrients for dogs. It aids them in growing strong and healthy muscles as puppies as well as maintaining their lean muscle weight during adulthood. Small breeds require sufficient fat that gives them enough energy to go about their day. It is advisable to find animal sources for fats and proteins as opposed to plant sources as they are easily digestible by dogs.

Yorkie have a lifespan of 12 to 16 years. Despite their likelihood of suffering from various health issues, they are relatively healthy. They also have a faster metabolism than larger dogs. A Yorkie requires about 40 pounds of calories per pound of bodyweight daily. As such, you need to feed them several small meals throughout the day, at least three or four times a day.

Since Yorkies are very active dogs, you need to choose a diet with high fat and calorie content. Feed them smaller kibbles, preferably dry dog food to aid in keeping their teeth clean because they are prone to severe dental problems. Make sure the diet also has an adequate supply of vitamins and minerals for extra nutritional value.

Dry vs. wet dog food for Yorkies

There are two varieties of dog foods available in most local retail stores – that is dry and wet dog food. Dry dog food is the best option for your Yorkie.

Yorkies have sensitive teeth and gums. Wet dog food does not promote healthy teeth and gums, and they often cause runny stools. As a result, it is best to feed your furry friend with dry kibble as a dietary staple.

It is also advisable to consult your vet on the best type of food to feed your Yorkie before making any final decisions.

Final words

After adopting my Yorkie, I quickly realized that this dog breed does not enjoy all types of foods. When it comes to feeding a Yorkshire Terrier, his quality of diet is of the utmost importance.

Make sure your dog’s kibble is as fresh as possible for maximum nutritional value. Consider warming up your Yorkie’s food and store any opened packages in airtight containers to avoid any contamination.

Once I noticed Darcy was not feeding well, I immediately took action by taking her to the vet. I was pleased to know that it was because she was not enjoying her meals, and not because of any health issues.

Today, Darcy is healthier and more active than she has ever been because of the diverse, complete, and balanced foods I feed her.
